'Hooiland' Field Research, Sint Pietersberg, Maastricht

Sint Pietersberg is located close to the flower field of Lepidoptarium in Maastricht. The Sint Pietersberg is known for its marl extraction. Marl is rich in limestone, which means there are flowery limestone grasslands on top of the Sint-Pietersberg. These limestone grasslands are very rare in the Netherlands and provide special flora and fauna.
The flowery grasslands are very popular with butterflies. The Sint-Pietersberg is one of the most butterfly-rich areas in the Netherlands. Due to the combination of a slightly warmer climate and the limestone grasslands, butterfly species can be found here that are not present elsewhere in the Netherlands. We also encounter many of these species in the flower field of Lepidoptarium in Maastricht.
